Patient discounts: what exists, and why we do not list them.

Arizona dispensaries discount heavily, and medical patients get the better end of most of it. What the state does not do is set any of these discounts, require them, or keep a list. Every one is a commercial decision by an individual shop, which is why you will find plenty of blog posts naming percentages and almost none of them current.

The categories you will actually meet

Medical-only pricing and menus. The most valuable and least advertised. Some products are reserved for patients, and some shops run a separate patient price on the same item.

Veteran discount. Very common, usually 10–20%, usually with a DD-214 or VA card. Worth saying plainly: this is the only veteran discount that exists in Arizona cannabis. AZDHS charges veterans the same $150 as everyone else — see the veterans guide.

Senior discount. Widespread, thresholds vary, usually 55 or 60+.

SNAP or low-income. Less common at the counter, and not to be confused with the state fee reduction, which is a different thing entirely: SNAP proof cuts the AZDHS card fee from $150 to $75.

First visit. Often the largest single discount you will ever be offered, and only once per shop. Worth planning your first big purchase around.

Daily and weekly deals. Concentrate Wednesdays, edible weekends, happy hours before noon. The least glamorous and, for a regular buyer, the largest cumulative saving.

Loyalty points and referrals. Most chains run one. They compound with the above more often than not.

Discounts and tax stack in your favor

A percentage discount comes off the pre-tax price, so it reduces the tax too. In Phoenix, a 20% discount on a $100 basket saves you $20 of product and about $1.80 of tax. Combine that with the medical rate instead of the adult-use rate and the two effects are multiplicative, not additive — the arithmetic is in what you actually pay at the register.

Why there is no list on this page

We publish no table of shops and percentages, for two reasons. The first is that it would be wrong within weeks — these change without notice and nobody announces it. The second is that this site previously carried invented dispensary names, presented as a local list with an “illustrative” disclaimer underneath. That is gone, and we are not replacing it with a table of numbers we cannot stand behind.

How to check, in about two minutes

  1. Find licensed shops near you on the AZDHS list at azdhs.gov — the only register that is authoritative.
  2. Open the menu on Weedmaps or Leafly and read the deals panel. It is usually current because the shop updates it to drive traffic.
  3. Phone and ask two questions: “what do you take off for medical patients?” and “do your menu prices include tax?” The second one decides whether two shops are actually comparable.
  4. Ask whether discounts stack. Many do not, and the staff will tell you which single one to take.

One caution

A deep discount on flower that has sat too long is not a saving. Check the harvest or packaging date before the price — our guide to reading lab reports covers what else is worth looking at on the label.

The card is what unlocks the medical-only pricing.
