Arizona MMJ Q&A: the 25 most-asked questions, answered.

After certifying thousands of Arizona medical cannabis patients, we hear the same questions over and over. This guide answers the 25 most common — from qualifying conditions to costs, dispensary rules, and beyond. If your question isn't here, our support team is always happy to help.

Getting your card

1. What conditions qualify for an Arizona medical marijuana card?

Arizona has a flexible list. The most common qualifying conditions are chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy. The law also allows certification for any condition where a physician believes cannabis may help. See our qualifying conditions guide.

2. Do I need a formal diagnosis?

Not always. The certifying physician makes a clinical judgment based on your medical history and consultation. Having a formal diagnosis helps but isn't required for common conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, or insomnia.

3. Can I get a card for anxiety or insomnia?

Yes — both are routinely approved under Arizona's catch-all provision, especially when they're chronic and other treatments haven't fully worked.

4. How long does the process take?

From application to dispensary: typically 2–5 business days. The physician visit takes about 10 minutes. Most patients are certified the same day if they apply before 3 PM MST. AZDHS issues the digital card in 1–3 business days.

5. Do I need to be an Arizona resident?

Yes. You need an Arizona-issued driver's license or state ID. Out-of-state patients cannot apply for an Arizona MMJ card.

6. How much does it cost?

First year: $229 total ($79 physician + $150 state). Renewals every 2 years: $209 ($59 + $150). Veterans: $49 + $0 (state fee exempt). SNAP: $49 + $75 (reduced state fee). See full pricing.

7. Does insurance cover medical cannabis?

No. Cannabis remains federally illegal (Schedule I), so most insurers don't cover it. Some HSA/FSA programs may allow reimbursement for physician consultation fees — check with your provider.

8. Is the application process different for minors?

Yes. Minors (under 18) need a designated caregiver, typically a parent. The caregiver applies separately, passes a background check, and pays a $200 fee in addition to the patient's fees. See our under-21 guide.

Using your card

9. Can I use my Arizona card in other states?

Yes, in several states including Nevada, Michigan, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Mexico, and Hawaii (with advance registration). The destination state's possession limits apply. See our reciprocity guide.

10. Where can I use my card?

Any Arizona dispensary (100+ statewide), plus dispensaries in reciprocity states. You can also grow up to 12 plants at home (6 mature) in a locked, enclosed space.

11. How much can I possess?

Medical patients: 2.5 oz of cannabis at any time, including up to 12.5g of concentrate. Recreational users (21+) can only have 1 oz and 5g concentrate.

12. Can I share with another adult?

No. Arizona law prohibits sharing medical cannabis with anyone, including other adults. The only exception is designated caregivers administering to their registered patient.

13. Can I consume cannabis in public?

No. Consumption must occur on private property. Public consumption (parks, sidewalks, restaurants, federal land) is illegal and subject to fines. This is true for both medical and recreational.

14. Can I drive after using cannabis?

No. Arizona has zero tolerance for THC-impaired driving. Even medical patients can be charged with DUI if found driving with THC in their system. Wait at least 4–6 hours after any consumption before driving.

15. Can I take cannabis on a plane?

No. TSA operates under federal law. Bringing cannabis through airport security — even within Arizona — is a federal offense. Many AZ airports have "amnesty boxes" for surrendering cannabis, but the safe move is to purchase at your destination.

Renewal and maintenance

16. How often do I need to renew?

Every 2 years. Your certifying physician must re-certify you, and you must submit a new AZDHS application with the $150 fee. We send automatic reminders 60, 30, and 7 days before expiration.

17. Can I renew with a different provider?

Yes. You're not locked in. You can switch certifying physicians or renewal services at any time. See our renewal guide.

18. What happens if my card expires?

If less than 90 days: you can still renew normally. If more than 90 days: AZDHS may require you to re-apply as a new patient. Don't let it lapse — renew on time.

Costs and savings

19. Is a medical card worth it in a recreational state?

For most regular consumers, yes. The 16% recreational excise tax alone typically costs regular users more per year than the card. Add to that: higher possession limits, earlier dispensary hours, reciprocity in other states, and access to higher-potency products. See our full comparison.

20. How much do I save on taxes per year?

It depends on your monthly spend. A $200/month user saves about $384/year in taxes — minus the $229 first-year card cost = $155 net saved. Higher spenders save more. See our cost calculator on the home page.

Dispensary and product questions

21. How do I choose a dispensary?

Most AZ cities have several. Consider: medical-only vs. dual-license, location, product selection, pricing, reviews, and veteran/senior discounts. You can visit any dispensary — you're not locked in. See our dispensary guide.

22. What should I buy on my first visit?

A starter pack: 1 pre-roll or 1g flower, 1 low-dose edible (5–10mg), 1 CBD tincture, 1 topical. Total: $60–100. Gives you a sample of every major product type.

23. How do I know what's in my product?

Every legal AZ cannabis product has a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a state-licensed lab. Ask the budtender to show it. The COA shows cannabinoid content, terpenes, and confirms it's free of contaminants. See our COA guide.

24. What's a good starting dose?

For flower or vaping: 1–2 small inhalations and wait 10 minutes. For edibles: 5mg THC, wait at least 2 hours before taking more. For tinctures: 2.5–5mg THC, wait 30–45 minutes. For CBD: 10–25mg is a good starting range.

Specific situations

25. Will my employer find out?

The Arizona Medical Marijuana Act (ARS §36-2814) provides employment protections for cardholders, but they're not absolute. Safety-sensitive positions (DOT, law enforcement, fire) typically still have zero-tolerance policies. Federal jobs prohibit cannabis use regardless. Don't use cannabis within 24 hours of drug testing if your job depends on passing it.

26. I'm a veteran — what are my options?

Veterans pay only $49 for the evaluation and the $150 state fee is waived (exempt). You'll need your DD-214 or VA documentation. See our veterans guide for the full process.

27. Can I take cannabis if I'm on other medications?

Most medications are safe with cannabis, but some have meaningful interactions (blood thinners like warfarin, certain anti-seizure meds, immunosuppressants). Always tell your prescribing physician. See our drug interactions guide.
